Bits and Bobs

September 1st, 2011

During the summer Budget tightened up regulations regarding the free additional driver included in the standard package. For all bookings made since August, the additional driver must be either ‘spouse’ or ‘domestic partner’. The important point is that the address on the driving licences must match for both drivers. We do have a different supplier that includes a free additional driver on the standard package with no such restrictions.

Rates for next year have been largely released – already in place is a surcharge for collections between July 1st and August 21st for all suppliers and from Dec 15 – 30th this year except Alamo and next year all suppliers.

We have the following feedback on our new supplier – Advantage by Hertz:

The Staff very friendly and no queue whatsoever. I would use them again. Although our car has 35000 plus miles on the clock it still feels very clean and newish… I did upgrade to a midsize car though, as they said our 3 suitcases would not fit in the small car they had available… I checked when we crossed over to the parking garage and their smallest car was definitely smaller than budgets smallest car… this will be fine with just 2 people travelling and cases but a bit tight with 3 people & cases. Their upgrade was only $5 per day though which seems reasonable.

Thank you Helen!

Meanwhile, Dollar has completed an overhaul of its operations by closing the mass of hotel locations, particularly in Las Vegas. It is now in a very different financial position to that of a couple of years ago.

EcoSafaris

July 11th, 2011

Florida EcoSafaris at Forever Florida (www.FloridaEcoSafaris.com) is the location of a groundbreaking new ecotourism experience. The Cypress FlyCycle will take guests on a fun and relaxing cycle ride through the treetops of the 4700 acre Forever Florida Wildlife Conservation Area in St. Cloud, Florida. Yes you read that right, cycling through the treetops.
Opening during July 2011, the innovative new attraction will be the first of its kind in the United States. Guests will set off on a one hour journey as they pedal along on specially designed FlyCycles; think of them as reclining bicycles suspended from a network of high tension steel cables. The course will take guests on a winding journey over the pine flatwoods and through Turkey Slough, a beautiful area of forested wetland. Guests will also get to pass over a pond housing George, a popular thirteen foot alligator that has called Forever Florida home for the last sixty plus years.

Located east of Kissimmee and just one hour southeast of Orlando, Florida EcoSafaris has carved out a unique niche for itself as Central Florida’s premier eco‐tourism attraction. They made history back in 2009 when they opened the first full scale zipline canopy tour in the state of Florida. Known as the Zipline Safari, the attraction has since hosted tens of thousands of guests from around the world on a thrilling journey through the conservation lands reaching speeds up to 25 mph and heights of 55 feet. The new Cypress FlyCycle is designed to compliment the Zipline Safari, providing amazing new views of the conservation lands, relaxation and plenty of fun.

The conservation efforts at Forever Florida are largely funded by the revenue generated by visitors to Florida EcoSafaris. Forever Florida has been identified by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as a biological hotspot hosting one the highest concentrations of endangered and threatened species in the state.
The ride technology for the new Cypress FlyCycle was developed by ECO‐Adventure Technologies and has been successfully operated for 4 years at the Hidden Worlds Adventure Park in Tulum, Mexico. When it opens in July 2011, the Cypress FlyCycle will be the second FlyCycle in the world and the very first in the United States.

Tickets for the new Cypress FlyCycle will be $45 per person. Participants will need to be at least 10 years old and weigh no more than 275lbs. Adventurers will be able to save with a combination Zipline Safari and Cypress FlyCycle ticket for just $120, a $10 savings. Other adventures offered by Florida EcoSafaris at Forever Florida include the fully guided Horseback Safari and Coach Safari. Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling 407‐957‐9794 ext 1. For more information, visit www.FloridaEcoSafaris.com.
Directions: Forever Florida is located at 4755 N. Kenansville Road in St. Cloud, Florida. From east or west, take US 192 to Holopaw, turn south on US 441 and drive 7.5 miles. Florida EcoSafaris at Forever Florida will be on the east (left) side of the highway.

Other Fun Summer ideas:
A brand new water sport has been launched in Key West with another location due to open at Marathon in the next month. The sport involves strapping on a seawater fuelled jetpack that allows the operator to fly about thirty feet above the surface of the water. Each pack trails a pipe which also tethers the flyer to the small boat that houses the pump. Flyers can circle, swoop and climb using intuititive flight controls whilst being held in an upright position. Despite the $250 price tag for a half hour session, this is bound to catch on. Summer Surcharges

June 7th, 2011

The terrible earthquake and Tsunami that followed in Japan is now having an effect on car rental in Florida. Most car hire companies have already extended the length of time, and level of mileage that cars may reach within fleets to avoid purchasing new stock, now those older cars are being hit by a lack of parts for maintenance and repair because manufacturers in Japan cannot produce the volume. Fleet availability is tightening up, and as a result we have seen summer surcharges introduced in Florida for the first time in years.

Budget has introduced a surcharge on all vehicles collected between 20th June and 21st August. Dollar has introduced a surcharge on all Vans, all SUV’s and Convertibles for the same dates – these are already in the system. We have now received notice that Alamo are to introduce a surcharge for collections between 1st July and 21st August on all Vans, all SUV’s and Convertibles – this will take effect for all bookings made from 10th June onwards – so if you need to make a reservation for the summer, now is the time before this increase commences.

E-tolling and Sunpass systems

May 24th, 2011

Regular travellers to Florida will know that the state has a good network of toll roads that allow drivers to bypass heavily loaded roads and speed on to your destination. Most drivers will be used to pulling off the toll roads to pay at the toll booths in cash while other drivers continue on their way through SunPass or E-Pass lanes without stopping.

Now, all rental car drivers can do the same thing thanks to Toll-by-plate. As the car goes through the SunPass lane a photograph is taken of the rear Tag plate (number plate). This is then matched up to the rental car company, and your rental, and then the toll is automatically billed to your credit card.

Since February 2011, the entire county of Miami-Dade has been E-tolling only – which means there are no longer any change booths available. If you fly into Miami International then you will more than likely use a toll road as to try and avoid them can lead you into some pretty seedy areas. This means that you will need to be aware of the toll-by-plate system. Once used, the system is active for the length of your rental so you can continue to use the SunPass lanes throughout Florida.

The rental companies do have different ways of billing:

For Alamo/National you will pay $2.00 per rental day, or $6.00 for the duration of your rental plus tolls. You opt in when you first drive through a SunPass lane.

For Dollar/Thrifty you will pay $6.99 per day or $36.99 for up to 30 days. This rate includes all your tolls and you must opt in to Pass 24 when you collect your car. If you fail to opt in and then go through a SunPass lane you will be charged a $25 admin fee plus the toll for EACH infraction.

For Budget/Avis you will pay $2.50 per day or $10.00 per week plus the cost of your tolls. There is no need to opt in, but once you have gone through a SunPass lane you will be charged for the length of the rental.

Spring Sale on Budget Cars

April 27th, 2011

We are delighted to bring you reduced rates for the spring. Our Budget cars now lead in at just £110 per week or just over £15 per day for an Economy 2 door, and of course the standard rate includes 2 drivers. The collection date must be on or before June 15th to qualify, and an additional bonus is that this period also includes Budget’s complimentary upgrade for cars in the compact, intermediate and full size ranges (subject to availability on the day). Combined with the excellent Fast Track facility at Orlando International Airport this makes a rental from Budget an all around winner.

Rock Springs, Kelly Park

April 27th, 2011

Within one hour of Orlando and US 192 is an original and all natural lazy river. Typhoon lagoon has always been our favourite water park with its laid back, relaxed atmosphere, mass of trees and plenty of space. But nothing that Disney can do can hold a light to the natural spring at Rock Springs. Rising up from the Florida Aquifer inside caves within the park, the water heads off at a smart pace down a half mile length of maintained waterway that can be swum, walked, or more invitingly ‘tubed’!
We headed up the new beltway, 429 to Apopka and turned right at the top towards Apopka on US 441. Just as we reached the busier part of town we took a left onto SR 435/Park Avenue. About five and a half miles later the road bends right, and on the left is the “World Famous” Rock Springs Bar and Grill. Here you can hire large tyre inner tubes for around $5 per day. We negotiated them down to $3 per tube. There is a place a little back that advertises tubes at $1 but it doesn’t open early in the mornings, and the early morning is the best time of day at this state park. So, tubes collected we headed into park.
There is a large car park amongst the trees, and we spotted large wild turkeys and plenty of squirrels as we walked down to the main pavilion where the concession stand and restrooms are located. We then headed down to the springs. As you approach down the board walk you arrive at the main swimming lagoon which is large, reasonably shallow and filled with fish. There is plenty of seating, or you can claim an area of grass either in or out of the shade.
The head of the springs is accessed by returning halfway to the main pavilion and then heading off to the left (or on your right if you are facing the water). Follow the boardwalk all the way to the end as the springs wind around to your left. At the top there are a couple of access points, right up by the caves there is a large flat rock and you can climb aboard your tube amongst the deep rocks here where the flow is fastest, or just slightly back, there is another access point which may be a little easier, particularly if you are not tubing. Then the water just propels you along while you enjoy an unrivalled view of the surrounding natural flora and fauna. Fish are your constant companions in the water, we also saw turtles, although this was much further down, and three deer browsing for leaves alongside the river. They were not at all fazed by the passing ooh’s and aah’s but had made themselves scarce by the late morning when the spring breakers arrived! Because we were there by 9.30 on a Monday morning, there seemed to be only about eight other people in the park and it was just perfect.
The river is full of water hyacinths and water lilies, along with the occasional rock to remind you to keep your posterior up in the tubes! The trip down the very lazy river takes about half an hour and along the way you pass through the main swimming lagoon before heading out again to the final bridge beyond which swimming is not permitted. The bottom of the river is sand or fine gravel and many people just swim or walk the river in perfect comfort, but a tube is really the most relaxing way to enjoy this trip. Trees drip with the evocative Spanish moss, palm trees reach for the sky, and shrubs light up the way with their joyful flowers.
At the end of this beautiful journey there is a sandy pool filled with many small freshwater shells and masses of tiny gold fish. A quick detour onto the bridge shows how the river looks where it is not maintained for the public – still picturesque, but the many logs lying in the water give a clue as to its potential.
A short walk along the boardwalk brings you back to the main swimming lagoon, picnic benches, bbq’s and even a play park for younger children. Our two mini adventurers spent a happy hour chasing fish without even once so much as touching one whilst we picked a good observation spot to recline in our tubes. If you do have folding chairs then they would be worth putting in the car for this one. There are ramps for disabled access to the level ground, plenty of toilets and covered picnicking areas.

Young Drivers – Great News

April 5th, 2011

We are delighted to be able to announce that, with immediate effect, up to 3 drivers aged 21 – 24 may drive on the Young Driver’s Package with Alamo. This is fantastic news for our drivers under 25 – and provides an economical alternative for clients arriving at airports other than Orlando.

We continue to offer U Save at Orlando which allows 2 drivers aged 21 – 25 with no surcharge at all, but we only have this contract with U Save at Orlando, not the other U Save locations.

Budget’s Young Driver Package continues to allow 1 driver aged 21 – 24 with no change to that package.

Traffic Light Cameras

February 23rd, 2011

Tourists driving in Florida need to be aware of cameras fixed on top of traffic lights which help enforce the law requiring drivers to stop on a red light. Haines City has five traffic light sections on US 27, a popular road for tourists as it has many subdivisions with villas for rent, and since mid-January when the system went live more than 8,000 citations have been sent out. The local police Chief has indicated that this represents an even split between locals and tourists!

There are currently just short of 240 traffic junctions with the photo enforced system around Florida with fines varying from $70 – $ 160. Any citations will be charged to your credit card once the fine reaches the hire company.

Money saving tips…

February 8th, 2011

Florida is a wonderful destination for a holiday, whether it is your annual family trip, the trip of a lifetime, or you go regularly – there is so much to see and do. The exchange rate may be a bit down on its $2 high a couple of years ago, but it is still better than 10 years ago and has remained around the $1.50 mark for tourists for quite a while now. This still represents good savings given that you often pay in Dollars the same sticker amount as you would in Sterling – saving you a third!

There has been some movement on our Budget prices this month for reservations after April 1st (this is the New Year as far as car hire goes!). But, our Alamo and Dollar prices for this summer (collections after April 1st) have been held at the current rates until the end of February, so if you know your plans for the year, now is the time to book! We strongly suspect that all prices will go up at the end of the month so you can save yourself a few pounds by booking ahead. Don’t forget that if your trip is a long way off, we can arrange to take funds later whilst still securing your booking – just contact us for details.

Dollar no longer offer 2 drivers with the standard package, but we still have a couple of suppliers that do, so please get in touch if you would like to explore this option and give us a call on 01428 741438.

Another fantastic way to save money on your trip is to plan ahead and join a group like www.groupon.com This is a website that sends out daily emails with special offers for you to buy. These usually consist of vouchers which you can then redeem when you arrive. By joining the US version, you can select Orlando or Miami or Tampa as your home town and then watch the offers flood in directly to your inbox.

Recent offerings have included half price ‘Flowriding’ sessions in Kissimmee, half-price Kayak Tours in the Indian River and half price snorkelling with Manatees. This is a great way to save money and find something really unique to do when you are on vacation.
