Great news for Alamo car hire fans. Firstly there is a bit of a sale on some Alamo cars currently, for collection before 31st March 2012 – new bookings only. This brings the price of the Economy 2 door car down to just £107 a week!
Secondly, Alamo have removed the unpopular summer surcharge, this just leaves Budget with a summer surcharge for rental car collections between 20th June and 20th August – the pressure may result in this surcharge also being lifted, watch this space….
Thirdly, from April 1 st 2012, Alamo will be offering clients the choice between refilling themselves to return the car, or pre-paying for the fuel – this is the same option as currently offered by Budget.
Finally, Alamo have included a new location for us at 6211 N. Atlantic Avenue, Cape Canaveral, increasing the options for this popular cruise embarkation point. With free one-way rentals from any Florida Alamo location such as Orlando International Airport, 3 drivers aged 21 – 24 with the Young Driver Package along with excellent Toll by Plate rates, this is really good news for cruise fans!

It is a sad fact that this summer saw the first seasonal surcharge on hire cars for years, and they are back again for Christmas. December 14th to December 31st are the dreaded dates, if you need to book a car for collection during that time then you really need to get it booked. We have just received notice that Alamo are charging a surcharge on their Van fleet during this period, but at the moment normal cars and SUV’s are still surcharge free! This may not stay the case though – so if you know your dates you should book up now to protect the current rate! Budget and Dollar already have the surcharges on all cars.

Florida EcoSafaris at Forever Florida (www.FloridaEcoSafaris.com) is the location of a groundbreaking new ecotourism experience. The Cypress FlyCycle will take guests on a fun and relaxing cycle ride through the treetops of the 4700 acre Forever Florida Wildlife Conservation Area in St. Cloud, Florida. Yes you read that right, cycling through the treetops.
Opening during July 2011, the innovative new attraction will be the first of its kind in the United States. Guests will set off on a one hour journey as they pedal along on specially designed FlyCycles; think of them as reclining bicycles suspended from a network of high tension steel cables. The course will take guests on a winding journey over the pine flatwoods and through Turkey Slough, a beautiful area of forested wetland. Guests will also get to pass over a pond housing George, a popular thirteen foot alligator that has called Forever Florida home for the last sixty plus years.
Located east of Kissimmee and just one hour southeast of Orlando, Florida EcoSafaris has carved out a unique niche for itself as Central Florida’s premier eco‐tourism attraction. They made history back in 2009 when they opened the first full scale zipline canopy tour in the state of Florida. Known as the Zipline Safari, the attraction has since hosted tens of thousands of guests from around the world on a thrilling journey through the conservation lands reaching speeds up to 25 mph and heights of 55 feet. The new Cypress FlyCycle is designed to compliment the Zipline Safari, providing amazing new views of the conservation lands, relaxation and plenty of fun.
The conservation efforts at Forever Florida are largely funded by the revenue generated by visitors to Florida EcoSafaris. Forever Florida has been identified by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission as a biological hotspot hosting one the highest concentrations of endangered and threatened species in the state.
The ride technology for the new Cypress FlyCycle was developed by ECO‐Adventure Technologies and has been successfully operated for 4 years at the Hidden Worlds Adventure Park in Tulum, Mexico. When it opens in July 2011, the Cypress FlyCycle will be the second FlyCycle in the world and the very first in the United States.
Tickets for the new Cypress FlyCycle will be $45 per person. Participants will need to be at least 10 years old and weigh no more than 275lbs. Adventurers will be able to save with a combination Zipline Safari and Cypress FlyCycle ticket for just $120, a $10 savings. Other adventures offered by Florida EcoSafaris at Forever Florida include the fully guided Horseback Safari and Coach Safari. Advance reservations are required and can be made by calling 407‐957‐9794 ext 1. For more information, visit www.FloridaEcoSafaris.com.
Directions: Forever Florida is located at 4755 N. Kenansville Road in St. Cloud, Florida. From east or west, take US 192 to Holopaw, turn south on US 441 and drive 7.5 miles. Florida EcoSafaris at Forever Florida will be on the east (left) side of the highway.
Other Fun Summer ideas:
A brand new water sport has been launched in Key West with another location due to open at Marathon in the next month. The sport involves strapping on a seawater fuelled jetpack that allows the operator to fly about thirty feet above the surface of the water. Each pack trails a pipe which also tethers the flyer to the small boat that houses the pump. Flyers can circle, swoop and climb using intuititive flight controls whilst being held in an upright position. Despite the $250 price tag for a half hour session, this is bound to catch on. Regular travellers to Florida will know that the state has a good network of toll roads that allow drivers to bypass heavily loaded roads and speed on to your destination. Most drivers will be used to pulling off the toll roads to pay at the toll booths in cash while other drivers continue on their way through SunPass or E-Pass lanes without stopping.
Now, all rental car drivers can do the same thing thanks to Toll-by-plate. As the car goes through the SunPass lane a photograph is taken of the rear Tag plate (number plate). This is then matched up to the rental car company, and your rental, and then the toll is automatically billed to your credit card.
Since February 2011, the entire county of Miami-Dade has been E-tolling only – which means there are no longer any change booths available. If you fly into Miami International then you will more than likely use a toll road as to try and avoid them can lead you into some pretty seedy areas. This means that you will need to be aware of the toll-by-plate system. Once used, the system is active for the length of your rental so you can continue to use the SunPass lanes throughout Florida.
The rental companies do have different ways of billing:
For Alamo/National you will pay $2.00 per rental day, or $6.00 for the duration of your rental plus tolls. You opt in when you first drive through a SunPass lane.
For Dollar/Thrifty you will pay $6.99 per day or $36.99 for up to 30 days. This rate includes all your tolls and you must opt in to Pass 24 when you collect your car. If you fail to opt in and then go through a SunPass lane you will be charged a $25 admin fee plus the toll for EACH infraction.
For Budget/Avis you will pay $2.50 per day or $10.00 per week plus the cost of your tolls. There is no need to opt in, but once you have gone through a SunPass lane you will be charged for the length of the rental.

We are delighted to bring you reduced rates for the spring. Our Budget cars now lead in at just £110 per week or just over £15 per day for an Economy 2 door, and of course the standard rate includes 2 drivers. The collection date must be on or before June 15th to qualify, and an additional bonus is that this period also includes Budget’s complimentary upgrade for cars in the compact, intermediate and full size ranges (subject to availability on the day). Combined with the excellent Fast Track facility at Orlando International Airport this makes a rental from Budget an all around winner.

We are delighted to be able to announce that, with immediate effect, up to 3 drivers aged 21 – 24 may drive on the Young Driver’s Package with Alamo. This is fantastic news for our drivers under 25 – and provides an economical alternative for clients arriving at airports other than Orlando.
We continue to offer U Save at Orlando which allows 2 drivers aged 21 – 25 with no surcharge at all, but we only have this contract with U Save at Orlando, not the other U Save locations.
Budget’s Young Driver Package continues to allow 1 driver aged 21 – 24 with no change to that package.

Tourists driving in Florida need to be aware of cameras fixed on top of traffic lights which help enforce the law requiring drivers to stop on a red light. Haines City has five traffic light sections on US 27, a popular road for tourists as it has many subdivisions with villas for rent, and since mid-January when the system went live more than 8,000 citations have been sent out. The local police Chief has indicated that this represents an even split between locals and tourists!
There are currently just short of 240 traffic junctions with the photo enforced system around Florida with fines varying from $70 – $ 160. Any citations will be charged to your credit card once the fine reaches the hire company.

Florida is a wonderful destination for a holiday, whether it is your annual family trip, the trip of a lifetime, or you go regularly – there is so much to see and do. The exchange rate may be a bit down on its $2 high a couple of years ago, but it is still better than 10 years ago and has remained around the $1.50 mark for tourists for quite a while now. This still represents good savings given that you often pay in Dollars the same sticker amount as you would in Sterling – saving you a third!
There has been some movement on our Budget prices this month for reservations after April 1st (this is the New Year as far as car hire goes!). But, our Alamo and Dollar prices for this summer (collections after April 1st) have been held at the current rates until the end of February, so if you know your plans for the year, now is the time to book! We strongly suspect that all prices will go up at the end of the month so you can save yourself a few pounds by booking ahead. Don’t forget that if your trip is a long way off, we can arrange to take funds later whilst still securing your booking – just contact us for details.
Dollar no longer offer 2 drivers with the standard package, but we still have a couple of suppliers that do, so please get in touch if you would like to explore this option and give us a call on 01428 741438.
Another fantastic way to save money on your trip is to plan ahead and join a group like www.groupon.com This is a website that sends out daily emails with special offers for you to buy. These usually consist of vouchers which you can then redeem when you arrive. By joining the US version, you can select Orlando or Miami or Tampa as your home town and then watch the offers flood in directly to your inbox.
Recent offerings have included half price ‘Flowriding’ sessions in Kissimmee, half-price Kayak Tours in the Indian River and half price snorkelling with Manatees. This is a great way to save money and find something really unique to do when you are on vacation.

Great news for British Airways passengers into Tampa. Not only will there be two extra flights per week from March 27th 2011, but now car hire clients can collect their Alamo cars from the terminal without having to get a shuttle!
BA is to move two of its weekly flights from Orlando to Tampa in March, this will provide daily service from the UK to Tampa for the airline, for the first time. Tampa International airport is only an hour or so away from the Walt Disney World / Kissimmee area and flights can often be a little cheaper than flying into Orlando. Because the airport is not as busy as Orlando, overall times of processing at Tampa are usually much quicker.
During November Alamo car hire moved its desks into the terminal area and its cars into the on-site car parks. Because Alamo are currently cheaper than the other providers on our website with almost identical packages, this makes them a very attractive proposition at the airport now.
If you would like to check what is included within your Alamo insurance package do please give us a call when we will be happy to fill you in.

Navigating a rickety footbridge over a river chasm can be dicey enough for explorers. In an all-new Disney adventure, what lurks below that bridge may quicken their step to get to the other side: Crocodiles!
A ravine of menacing-looking crocs, pools of hippos, bushwalks along untracked terrain and other thrills await guests on Wild Africa Trek, a unique wildlife experience scheduled to launch in early 2011 into the deepest, most-remote reaches of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Reservations can now be booked for the three-hour, expert-led adventure that will immerse guests in the realms and wildlife thrills of far-off Africa – without leaving Walt Disney World Resort. In small groups, guests on the Wild Africa Trek will enjoy an “up-close-and-personal” experience with African wildlife species that make their home in Pangani Forest as well as other areas of the park’s Harambe Wildlife Reserve. As part of the adventure, guests will clip onto a lifeline as they step to the very edge of a cliff to get amazingly close to the hippos and crocs waiting just below. Talk about cliff-hangers!
Adventure-minded guests will have the experience of a lifetime as they get immersed in an authentic African safari experience that only Disney can deliver,” said Michael Colglazier, vice president of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. “We are thrilled to be offering this unique outdoor adventure aimed at active vacationers, taking interactions with the incredible animals that inhabit the Harambe Reserve to the next level and literally blazing new trails in our park.”
Highlights of what’s in store for guests on this add-on adventure:
Navigating through fern and vine forests on a bushwalk that sets a course for adventure.
Trekking with experienced guides through areas of Harambe Wildlife Reserve that aren’t explored during regular Disney’s Animal Kingdom experiences.
Clipping into a harness attached to a safety line, crossing a seemingly precarious rope bridge over the Safi River and cliff-hanging at the edge of gullies that are home to hippos and crocodiles.
Experiencing the thrill of “over-landing” in customized open-air vehicles following the edge of a magnificent, wide-open savanna.
Unwinding from an unforgettable adventure at a private safari camp for wildlife viewing. At this station elevated above the savanna, guests savour sample tastes of Africa as their adventure draws to a relaxing and satisfying close.
Wild Africa Trek will be offered several times daily at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Groups will be kept small, consisting of no more than 12 trekkers per safari.
Reservations for Wild Africa Trek can be arranged by calling 407-WDW-TOUR (939-8687). Pricing for this unique adventure will vary seasonally. Guests who reserve a booking from Jan. 16-Feb. 26, 2011, may take advantage of an introductory offer starting at $129. Park admission is required for participants.
While Disney Transportation is always available and complimentary, it can involve quite a bit of waiting about for buses. At certain times of day like park entry and closing the buses can be overwhelming. Consider hiring your own car for some flexibility – you don’t have to pay for parking if you are staying on site – and then you have access to cheaper shops and restaurants away from Disney World. You could well save the cost of your car hire in cheaper meals and food by going off site a few times!
